Project #summercabinspruceup

Cody, Wyoming

When we bought our house in 2009, it was definitely a fixer-upper (in a BIG way). But we had fallen in love with the huge backyard and enormous, old trees. The little guest house in the back corner was a selling point, too. And, we’ve spent many summers, since, enjoying the space — even though it was in desperate need of an overhaul. Our long weeks in quarantine spurred us to take on a lot of home projects, both big and small, and the summer cabin was at the top of the list.

We began with the exterior — we matched SW Turkish Coffee for the cabin, with BM Ultra White trim, BM Radicchio on the door, and BM First Light on the antique Adirondack furniture. (The chicken coop nearby was painted to match, of course!)

On the inside, we installed a new LVP flooring (moisture-resistance was super important), retiled the wood stove platform and repainted the inside (BM White Dove). Vintage Pendleton blankets and a magpie painting by Dayton artist Sonja Caywood provide pops of color. The rug, from Ruggable, is machine washable — also important as kids and animals file in and out. The antique Stickley rocking chair (my mom rocked both my little sister and me in this chair when we were babies) was recovered with a fabric from Pendleton’s collection for Sunbrella. Smokey, the rocking horse I rode feverishly as child, found a home here — as did my Grammy’s cuckoo clock (it no longer works, so it got a coat of high-gloss black paint).

It’s a huge improvement, and we are using the summer cabin more than ever now.
